How to get your voice heard

So, you're ready to start sharing your voice with others...

The Internet

Luckily for you in this day and age, we have the internet.  That makes things MUCH easier.  The first thing that comes to mind when talking about sharing music over the internet is.... MYSPACE!  MySpace connects the whole world and allows you to interact with people you would have never imagined possible.  You can get feedback from your next door neighbor or someone you never even knew existed on the other side of the world.  If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing, then go to www.myspace.com and sign-up as an artist.  They allow you to upload 4 songs onto your profile.  Be careful about just throwing your work out on the internet for the whole world to copy down in a notebook; make sure you know what you are doing.  Once you have your artist profile setup, people from all over the world can start listening to your music and leave you feedback.

When you sign-up for myspace you get to choose an individual link.  For example, the CanAnybodySing.com myspace is "myspace.com/cananybodysing" and that is a good thing to know because if you are ever talking to someone in the future but don't have a CD of your work to give to them then you can just tell them to go to "myspace.com/YourNameHere"

In Person

Without the internet, you can still survive.  It might be a little harder to come in contact with all of the people you could potentially come in contact with online, but you can still get the job done.  First, if you haven't already, read the tutorials on how to record yourself and how to make a demo.  If you can record yourself onto your computer then you can start creating CDs right from home (maybe not professional quality plastic-wrapped masterpieces, but you can still get the job done!).  Make lots of copies to hand out to your family, friends, neighbors, aquaintances, classmates, co-workers, and just about anybody that you believe might be interested in hearing your music.  Gauge it all based on how many people you want to spread your music to.  If you aren't that serious about being heard then you can just hand it out to a couple of people, but if you plan on pursuing a singing career then hand copies out like crazy!  But again, be careful about just handing out all of your music.  Copyright  your stuff if you want to be extra safe!  You can never be too safe.

If people enjoy your music then they will share it with others.  Or they will be playing it in the car and a friend will ask, "hey, who is this?" Before you know it, you will be known throughout your hometown (you will be a "local band" or "local singer" or as some like to call it "the underground").  If you are making great music then you have nowhere to go but up!

Back to the Internet.

Myspace would be the best solution at first.  Then, after you have established a fanbase, you can create your own band website (a real website).  Here is why I first suggest Myspace before making a real band website:  if you were to first create a band website then nobody will know it exists, you would have to go advertise it somewhere.  On myspace, you can add people to your friends list and they can listen, and then their friends will see you on their list and they can listen.  It goes on and on like that.  Then once you have a fanbase or list of contacts, you can create a real band website and start telling people about it.  Or you can create a myspace AND a real band website at the same time.  Do what you feel is best!
